Padding should reflect the vulnerability and replacement cost of what you carry. Cables need little impact protection; portable drives, small cameras, and fragile adapters justify more structure.
Light padding
Lightly padded fabric reduces scratches and keeps weight low. It is usually adequate when the pouch lives inside a protected laptop bag and contains mostly cables.
Structured padding
Foam panels help a pouch hold its shape and protect rigid electronics from nearby objects. The cost is additional bulk and reduced compressibility.
Hard-shell cases
A hard or semi-rigid shell provides stronger crush resistance but occupies a fixed amount of space even when nearly empty. It may be appropriate for fragile equipment rather than an ordinary charging kit.
Remember the zipper
Padding does not help if a crowded loadout presses components against the zipper. Leave enough room for the case to close naturally.
